My prompt was to design a commercial espresso machine that was built specifically for a barista working behind a bodega counter. There were multiple challenges I found in this problem space.
Workers are interacting with both cafe and store customers simultaneously in multiple roles.
Markets and bodegas have limited counter space.
Workflows have to adapt to the unconventional space behind a bodega counter.
→ Make it easy to multitask with.
→ Keep the workspace open and footprint small.
→ Allow for multiple customizable configurations.
I focused on trying to create brewing systems that could be adapted to a bodega worker's space and workflow during initial ideation.

As I began with rough CAD, I leaned towards more architectural forms that had an open feeling that would keep the machine from feeling cramped.

By basing the form off of the angle of the back face, I experimented with dividing up the form in different ways. Eventually, I realized I wanted to take a filleted approach to the form to keep it from appearing too hostile.

The 718 Classic is a machine made for the specific constraints and demands of any corner store or market that serves fresh espresso.
To keep the machine visible during multitasking, the open body and reflective backplate allow for the barista to quickly understand at a glance the progress of the shot being pulled.
Beyond this, the screen consists of a simple UI display to show brewing progress.
